What's the big idea?!!
These MJHS students are about to embark on an amazing adventure, one more personalized, more explosive, and perhaps more meaningful than any other school project that they've come across. That's my idea at least. I want to put a twist into their concept of education and have it be something that they want for their own intrinsic benefit. Gone is the day of doing the work for me, the teacher, when there's nothing more valuable than doing something for yourself. Okay, that's a little egocentric, but what I mean by that is that I want to change their education process so that they are the center of the project, the driving force behind their actions, and the majority shareholder in accomplishment and effort.
The big idea is about creating a project that centers around a 2 day open-to-the-public seminar of student projects. The project simply has to meet three basic requirements:
First, after identifying what it is that they want to do, they need to find out how exactly they're going to document it. I call this part media content documentation. Come the day of their 10 minute presentations to the public, how are they going to display their information? Are they going to have to learn how to make a webpage through weebly or create an etsy account to sell a product? Are they going to use cutting edge presentation software like Prezi or create advertisements through Animoto? Will they need to create a YouTube account to publish their videos or are they going to create a blog for a series of DIY projects?
Second, they're going to have to create a personalized document that charts their project's progress. Call this a diary, call this a journal, call it a captain's log, no matter what you call it, it's intended to show their thoughts, struggles, and victories through the project. A second document will be a collection of all the research that was needed for the project.
Third, it needs to have an authentic audience. They need to connect with people that they don't already know, and either gather information from them, advertise their ideas to them, or create feedback from them in the form of survey. This could be testimonials, it could be interviews, email correspondence, blog correspondence, selling a product, surveying the public, or any other form of making connections with the community or this place we call Earth.
I'm looking to get as many people involved as possible for the peek of this project. Stay tuned for more information, pictures, updates, and something that will surely change they way you think about the classroom.
